`BUILT
TO GRIND' BOOK Memo to moms with teen-age skaters: the book
"Built To Grind, 25 years of hardcore skateboarding" should
be rated R. The 320-page tome includes more than one skater
flipping off the camera, bare female breasts and quite a few
f-bombs.
A
sample quote from a skater: "Old school. New school. (bleep)
school."
But
for adults into the skating culture, "Built to Grind" is a
fascinating look at skating's past. The photography, as you'd
expect, is spectacular, particularly the retro stuff.
The
book's first picture captures its essence. In a 1979 black-and-white
shot, Peter Gifford, sporting striped tube socks, is grinding
at the top of a pool, looking at the lens with a defiant sneer,
his right hand clenched in a fist.
Should
the coffee-table book fall to the floor, be careful picking
it up. Bend from the knees. Weighing in at about 4 pounds,
it's not a light read.
